Qualifications to Become a Volunteer Firefighter: KEY FIRE SAFETY TIPS, per National Fire Protection Association (NFPA): Many home fires are preventable: Watch your cooking Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave, even for a short time, turn off the stove. Give space heaters space Keep fixed and portable space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn. Turn off heaters when you leave the room or go to sleep. Smoke outside Ask smokers to smoke outside. Have sturdy, deep ashtrays for smokers. Keep matches and lighters out of reach Keep matches and lighters up high, out of the reach of children, preferably in a cabinet with a child lock. Inspect electrical cords Replace cords that are cracked, damaged, have broken plugs, or have loose connections. Be careful when using candles Keep candles at least one foot from anything that can burn. Blow out candles when you leave the room or go to sleep. Have a home fire escape plan Make a home fire escape plan and practice it at least twice a year. Install smoke alarms Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Interconnect smoke alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound. Test smoke alarms Test smoke alarms at least once a month and replace batteries once a year or when the alarm “chirps” to tell you the battery is low. Replace any smoke alarm that is more than 10 years old. Install sprinklers If you are building or remodeling your home, install residential fire sprinklers. Sprinklers can contain and may even extinguish a fire in less time than it would take the fire department to arrive. Source: National Fire Protection Association (NFPA®)

McGuire 2023-Present Memoirs of Northvale VFW Members Eagle Project by Seamus Ward For my eagle project, members of the Northvale VFW were interviewed about their service in foreign wars. These interviews were put into PDF documents and are here on this web page. This web page was designed with the intention of increasing awareness regarding the service of these brave Americans. I encourage anyone and everyone to read and become aware of what these men and women have done for our country. Thousands of American men and women have served in the military in foreign wars. To aid their adjustment after returning from these wars, the VFW was established. Although recent and current wars are present in our thoughts, many years have passed since WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. As a result many veterans have grown old, died, and some may even have been forgotten. I have learned from a member from the Northvale VFW post 162, that many veterans die with people knowing very little or nothing of their Service in the Military. I would like to change this unfortunate occurrence. These soldiers fought for our right to be free. I want to ensure they are remembered and honored. Below are PDF files containing interviews of the Veterans. Brady, Don Cambareri, Vincent Connoly, Leonard R. Di Blasio, Salvatore Doran, Cecil England, Brian Grassi, Joseph Griepenburg, George W. Beginning with only a handful of members and a 1951 Cadillac, the NVAC made a commitment to serve their community and those nearby, faithfully and professionally. This continues today—the Corps responded to over 500 emergency calls in 2007 in Northvale, Rockleigh and surrounding communities in the Northern Valley—using two ambulances and still with small crews. The success of the Northvale Volunteer Ambulance Corps is based on the hard work and dedication of its members, past and present. Yet, for this success to endure, new members are needed to help continue performing basic life skills to the people in our area when injury or illness occurs. If you would like to join, please contact us at 201-768-6040 or stop by the Ambulance Building located at 196 Firenze Street, any day between 7 PM and 8 PM.
